The Memorial Fort Lauderdale Sharks Wheelchair Basketball Team kicked off their 2015 season with a pep rally held at Memorial Regional Hospital South.
The Sharks are part of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association and are scheduled to start the season with a tournament on October 3rd at Nova Southeastern University.
The team is sponsored by Memorial Rehabilitation Institute’s Adaptive Sports and Recreation program.
The new program, part of the Memorial Healthcare System, aims to showcase a wide variety of sports and exercises beneficial to the physical and mental health of those who have suffered strokes, lost the use of limbs, or are coping with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.
Other adaptive sports with Memorial include bowling, tennis, golf and scuba diving.
The program got started in November of last year with Ray Shipman, former New Orleans Saints football player.
