Dr. Scholl is a cardiac surgeon that operates on children, many of whom have been diagnosed in utero with heart issues.
Some of these include valve defects, leakage, abnormalities between the left and right sides of the organ, and holes in the heart. Problems with the heart are the most common birth defect.
Dr. Scholl’s expertise includes using autologous tissue to repair congenital heart defects. Prior to coming to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, his research concerned the development of a cardiac tissue bank for proteomic analysis of cardiac function, development and pathophysiology.
He also shares a patent for an implantable pediatric ventricular assist device.
