ECMO Saves Flu Victim’s Life at Memorial Regional Hospital
When he arrived in the emergency department of Memorial Regional Hospital, Pietro’s case of H1N1 flu had practically shut down his lungs – and time was running out. Luckily, the teams at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital had the equipment and expertise to use ECMO, a life-support system that saved Pietro. A flu shot would have helped him avoid H1N1, but TotalHeart care helped him survive it. Memorial is one of the few Florida heart centers providing ECMO, LVAD and heart transplants.
