Meet Dr. Herschel Scher Pulmonologist Joe DiMaggio Childrens Hospital
Dr. Herschel Scher is a board-certified pediatric pulmonologist. He is a native of South Africa who graduated from the University of Capetown Medical School. He had an internship at Kimberley Hospital before serving as a medical officer in the South African Defense Force. He was a senior house officer in obstetrics and gynecology and pediatrics at Groote Schuur Hospital Observatory, where he later held a residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric allergy as a joint appointment with Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.
In London, Dr. Scher was a senior registrar in dermatology/special pediatrics at the Hospital for Sick Children. He then moved to the US to pursue fellowships in pediatric allergy and pulmonology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and a residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center (Schneider Children’s Hospital) in New York.
Dr. Scher is a former faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma, where he taught pediatric pulmonology and allergy medicine. He is also a former director of the Pediatric Asthma and Allergy Service at Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma. His research interests include clinical pharmacology of drugs used in respiratory medicine, and respiratory infections in cystic fibrosis patients.
